On November 13th, people around the world committed random acts of kindness in honor of World Kindness Day. Hawthorne reading specialist, Karen Griffin, introduced the BKind initiative to students after learning about the program from a friend. The BKind Foundation, founded in 2013, aims to spread random acts of kindness far and wide through the good works of the BKind clubs at middle and high schools across the country.
One of the initiatives that Ms. Griffin was able to bring to Hawthorne was the canvas bag project. Students were given bags to decorate with loving messages which were then filled with toiletries and sent to people in need at area shelters. The teachers explained to the children, "When your beautifully decorated bag is given to someone in need, it will put a big smile on their face and it may even change their life." A powerful lesson to a young child that a simple act of kindness can make the world a much better place for someone. In fact, Hawthorne students decorated more than 450 bags! That is a lot of kindness being spread around.
