He's back!! The beloved Humphrey has come back to Hawthorne Elementary to get kids excited about reading.

At a kickoff assembly on March 4th for the second annual One Book, One School event, children were given clues to guess the title of the book that the whole school will be reading together for the month of March.  Squeals of excitement could be heard when the lovable character made an appearance in person to reveal the title: "Friendship According to Humphrey" by Betty G. Birney.

Back in class, each student received a copy of the book, generously funded by the PTA, to bring home and read with their families. Families are asked to read or listen to one chapter per night and then children will do enrichment activities related to the book in class.  Special guest readers have recorded their voices so that children will have fun listening to each chapter.  According to the “Read to Them” organization, creators of the One School, One Book program, “The benefits of reading aloud are remarkable. Studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, to build bigger vocabularies, to understand concepts better, to feel positive about both books and learning – and much more.

Once the book activities are completed, students will enjoy a culminating assembly to celebrate their accomplishments.
