Second Grade
Second graders have figured out what it means to be in school and they take their job very seriously. They begin to consolidate their learning and engage in more complex reading and math. Second grade students are reading series and chapter books across genres, making inferences about big ideas and lessons learned. Second graders begin to represent and solve multi-step problems in mathematics, taking a deep dive into multi-digit addition and subtraction, and exploring the foundations of multiplication. They learn about communities in social studies. In science second graders learn about the earth, matter, and organisms. They take a leadership role in setting examples for their kindergarten and first grade peers. Second graders practice expressing themselves and navigating friendships as they practice safe, responsible, and respectful decision making.
A typical day includes whole group and small group instruction in the core content areas. Students learn through shared, guided and independent practice of concepts and skills. In addition to core content areas, students attend a 45-minute class in Visual Arts, Performing Arts, STEM or Library Media, and a 30-minute Physical Education and Health class daily.
The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is responsible for setting student learning expectations (standards) for what all students should know and be able to do as a result of skilled instruction.
