Fire Prevention Day 2019
Hawthorne Elementary students were treated to a visit from the Hawthorne and Thornwood Fire Departments on October 7th in honor of National Fire Prevention Month. Students in every class had the chance to meet the firefighters, climb on the trucks, and hear a lesson in fire safety.
The firefighters talked to the children about the importance of having working smoke and fire alarms in the house. These devices can help save a life by giving a family warning that there may be a fire in the home. The children also learned the importance of "Stop, Drop and Roll" and had the chance to practice their technique. Finally, the students were reminded not be scared or hide from the firefighters in an emergency and saw the emergency workers dressed in their full uniform.
All of the students were given bright red backpacks to bring home after the presentation. The students were duly impressed and will now likely be prepared in case of an emergency.
