HES Students Learn Where their Garbage Goes

“Where Does My Garbage Go” was an interactive program in which students learned what happens when they toss their uneaten food, paper napkins and cups, and plastic utensils into the nearest trash can. They learned that the average American generates approximately 6 pounds each of trash per day with everything from paper, uneaten food, plastic, glass, metal, old batteries, and tons of other things. They then followed their trash on a journey to learn where it goes and along the way encounter a waste-to-energy incinerator, landfills, a recycling plant, and composting and realize there is another way not to “waste” garbage. They also talked about how garbage impacts living creatures and their environments.
