October is National Fire Prevention Month
Hawthorne Elementary students were treated to a visit from the Hawthorne and Thornwood Fire Departments on October 12th in honor of National Fire Prevention Month. Students in every class had the chance to meet the firefighters, climb on the trucks, play with the hoses and hear a lesson in fire safety.
The firefighters talked to the children about the importance of having working smoke and fire alarms in the house. These devices can help save a life by giving a family warning that there may be a fire in the home. The children also learned the importance of "Stop, Drop and Roll". They were impressed to learn that this method could help prevent injury in a situation where their clothes might catch fire. Finally, the students were reminded not be scared or hide from the firefighters in an emergency. They are there to help them.
All of the students were given bright red fire hats to bring home after the presentation. The students were duly impressed and will no likely be prepared in case of an emergency.
